Establish a known-good baseline
Use the same Mac, Tesla, account, document, and quality preset on a reliable shared Wi-Fi network. Open a text-heavy page and scroll slowly, then move a window. If that already performs poorly, troubleshoot the app or local setup first. Switching to a mobile hotspot will not identify the cause of an issue that is present on every network.
Change only the network
Connect both devices to the phone hotspot while parked. Confirm that an ordinary webpage opens on each device before pairing again. Tesla documents phone tethering as an internet option, subject to the mobile carrier’s restrictions. Keep the phone where it has a usable cellular connection and avoid covering it with equipment. Start the same screen-sharing task used in the baseline.
Reduce the stream before replacing equipment
Lower the resolution or frame-rate preset and repeat the test. A static reference page needs less frequent visual change than a fast-scrolling website or a video. Pause background uploads on the Mac if they are competing with the stream. Note whether the problem is slow initial pairing, unreadable text, delayed pointer response, or periodic freezing; those are different symptoms.
Compare a second connection path
If available, test the Mac on the hotspot with the Tesla on its own cellular browser connection. This can behave differently, but there is no universal winner. If the hotspot is unreliable in that location, the separate path still depends on the Mac’s cellular upload. Keep a quick note of the location, connection arrangement, and preset so your next test changes one variable rather than repeating the same uncertainty.
