Extend vs mirror: which Tesla second-screen mode should you use?

Choose Extend when you want more room for separate windows. Choose Mirror when you want the Tesla to show the same view as your Mac. Neither mode moves your apps into the car: the Mac continues to run them.

Extend for reference material

An extended desktop is useful when one window stays on the laptop and another belongs beside it. Put the document you are editing on the Mac and a checklist, brief, or reference page on the Tesla. Begin with one additional window so you can see whether the arrangement makes your work easier before spreading an entire desktop across both displays.

Mirror for a shared view

Mirroring is easier when you want to demonstrate the exact screen on your laptop or keep a larger view of one app. It does not add room for a second independent document. If you keep dragging windows away and expecting them to stay on only one display, switch to Extend. If you lose track of where a window went, Mirror may be a simpler starting point.

Arrange the screens deliberately

In macOS display settings, arrange the extra display on the side that matches how you expect the pointer to move. Bring a small window over first. If the pointer disappears at the wrong edge, adjust the arrangement instead of assuming the stream has disconnected. Increase text size inside the app so the center screen is readable from your actual seating position.

Choose the control method separately

Display mode and touchscreen control are separate choices. You can use either display mode with the Mac’s keyboard and trackpad. Optional Tesla touch input requires macOS control permission and the app’s control setting. If you are just reading a reference, you may not need touch at all.

Try a ten-minute workflow

A useful comparison is ten minutes editing a document with a reference alongside it, followed by ten minutes mirroring a single window. Notice which arrangement needs fewer adjustments. Your choice can change by task. This is a parked Mac display feature, not CarPlay, a Windows desktop, or a way to operate the app while driving.
